Tales of the Unexpected (1979)

Overview

Tales of the Unexpected arrived on screens in 1979 as one of the most distinctive anthology series in British television history, running for nine seasons before audiences. At its core lies a structure built on adaptations of short stories by the world-renowned British author Roald Dahl, with each episode presenting its own self-contained tale. While many names contributed to the project, from director Alan Gibson to the acting cast, one of the directors who worked on various episodes of the series was Alan Rowe. This kind of rotating directorial approach allowed each episode to carry its own distinct atmosphere.

The show's title essentially sums up exactly what it promises viewers: unexpected endings, surprising twists, and narratives that expose the dark, ironic sides of human nature. Arriving during one of the golden ages of British television production, the show stood out for its quality scriptwriting and atmospheric direction, becoming one of the significant productions of its time. Roald Dahl's distinctive brand of black humor permeates every episode, and this is one of the key elements that sets the series apart from a typical anthology production.

Tales of the Unexpected reached a wide audience during its original run, receiving positive reactions from both critics and viewers alike. Today, it is still regarded as one of the pioneers of the anthology series genre.

Plot

The show's fundamental structure is built on independent stories featuring different characters in different settings in each episode. What these stories have in common is that a seemingly ordinary situation usually evolves toward an unexpected and often unsettling conclusion. True to Dahl's style of storytelling, characters are typically driven by petty schemes, jealousy, greed, or feelings of revenge, and these impulses lead them toward unforeseen outcomes.

The series does not offer a single main character or a continuous plotline in the classic sense. Instead, each episode functions as a short film in its own right. Some episodes deal with tensions within marriages, others with the tragic consequences of greed for money, and others still with the darker side of human nature. This variety, offering viewers a different world and a different kind of tension in every episode, forms the show's greatest appeal.

The episodes directed by Alan Rowe remain true to this overall structure, offering atmospheric, suspense-filled narratives that delve into the psychological depths of their characters. The general tone of the series draws on classic British mystery literature, delivering a finely crafted yet impactful narrative style.

Why Watch It?

Tales of the Unexpected offers one of the best examples of how masterfully the anthology format can be used in television history. Bringing stories by a respected figure of the literary world like Roald Dahl to the screen gives the series a literary depth. Viewers get the chance to watch not just a television show, but a visual interpretation of the art of short-story writing.

The fact that each episode stands alone gives viewers flexibility; it's possible to start with any episode, with no obligation to follow previous ones. This is a major advantage for viewers with busy schedules. Additionally, the show's surprise-ending formula encourages viewers to guess at outcomes in every episode, making the viewing experience interactive.

The visual language, acting performances, and scriptwriting craftsmanship, all reflecting the quality of British television production of the era, offer a nostalgic and enjoyable experience for today's audiences as well. It's a satisfying choice for fans of classic suspense and black comedy.

Who Is It For?

This series particularly appeals to viewers who favor the short-story format, preferring compact and impactful stories over long, complex narratives. Those familiar with Roald Dahl's literary style, or who enjoy the author's other works, will take great pleasure in these adaptations.

It is also an ideal choice for viewers interested in classic suspense, mystery, and black comedy genres. Additionally, it's a valuable resource for those curious about the atmosphere of old British television productions and who want to experience the filming techniques and storytelling style of the era. Those who enjoy abrupt endings and ironic twists will be thoroughly pleased with what the series has to offer.

On the other hand, for those who prefer fast-paced, action-heavy productions or ones adorned with modern visual effects, this series may feel somewhat slow and dated.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

1. Rich and original scripts drawing on Roald Dahl's powerful storytelling.

2. Flexible viewing made possible by each episode's self-contained nature.

3. A memorable narrative style filled with black comedy and ironic surprise endings.

Cons:

1. The pacing of some episodes may feel slow to today's viewers.

2. Due to period production techniques, it looks dated visually compared to modern productions.

Genre and Tone

Tales of the Unexpected has a tone that blends mystery, suspense, and black comedy. The show's overall atmosphere is built on a structure that keeps viewers constantly on edge, gradually building tension. Dahl's signature ironic, and sometimes disturbing, endings add a layer of dark wit to the show's tone.

The production embraces the atmospheric, introspective narrative style of classic British mystery literature. Character-driven stories generally center on human weaknesses, greed, or moral decay, lending the series psychological depth. Visually, it employs simple yet effective cinematography, proving quite successful at creating atmosphere given the constraints of the era.

Runtime and Viewing Experience

The show's episodes are generally presented in a short format, running approximately half an hour. This brief duration requires each episode to be densely and effectively constructed; the writers and directors manage to build strong tension and deliver an unexpected finale within this limited timeframe.

In terms of viewing experience, the series is structured in a way that easily fits into the busy pace of everyday life. Since it doesn't require following a long story arc, viewers can watch an episode and complete the story whenever they like. This makes it a flexible production that can be consumed both in binge-watching sessions and through occasional, casual viewing. Its extensive nine-season archive of episodes offers viewers a long-lasting experience of discovery.

Final Assessment

Tales of the Unexpected is a production that has solidified its place in television history as one of the most successful examples of the anthology series format. Strong scripts drawing on Roald Dahl's literary legacy, combined with ironic and surprising endings, offer viewers a distinctive experience. The episodes shaped by the contributions of directors like Alan Rowe enhance the overall quality and diversity of the series.

An essential choice for fans of classic suspense and black comedy, this series also serves as proof of just how successfully the short-story format can be adapted for television. While some episodes may feel dated to today's viewers, the series still stands out as a production that can be enjoyed thoroughly thanks to the literary depth and surprising narrative style it offers. It is recommended for anyone with an interest in the anthology series genre or anyone looking to discover nostalgic British television productions.
