Masters of Sex (2013)

Overview

Masters of Sex is a significant period drama that premiered on Showtime in 2013. The series is based on the real-life story of Dr. William Masters and his assistant Virginia Johnson, who dared to conduct scientific research on human sexuality in conservative 1950s America. Created by Michelle Ashford, the production was inspired by Thomas Maier's biography of the same name.

Starring Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan in the lead roles, the series ran for four seasons and comprised 46 episodes in total. The cast also includes names such as Caitlin FitzGerald, Teddy Sears, and Nicholas D'Agosto. Among the many people who contributed to the production's music, editing, and technical team is editor Jack Impellizzeri, whose work played an important role in properly conveying the show's emotional pacing.

The series garnered great acclaim from both critics and audiences, earned nominations at numerous award ceremonies, and has been regarded as one of the productions that set the quality standard in the period drama category.

Plot

The story begins when gynecologist Dr. William Masters decides to scientifically examine human sexual response, defying the social norms of the era. Masters begins working with Virginia Johnson, whom he hires as a secretary, to research this sensitive and taboo subject. Over time, the two develop not just a scientific partnership but also a complex and profound personal bond.

Going beyond the laboratory experiments, the series delves deeply into the era's social pressures, the institution of marriage, the place of women in society, gender roles, and the obstacles standing in the way of scientific research. Masters's marriage, Johnson's struggle to exist as an independent woman, and the reactions their research provokes in academic circles form the main threads of the story.

As the seasons progress, the pair expand their research, face new challenges, and undergo major transformations in both their professional and personal lives. Although the series draws inspiration from real events, it also incorporates fictional elements for dramatic storytelling.

Why Watch It?

Masters of Sex never uses its bold subject matter as a cheap hook; instead, it examines the most intimate aspects of human nature from a scientific and humane perspective. The series's greatest strength is that it handles a taboo topic through character-driven storytelling, avoiding didacticism.

The performances of Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan form the backbone of the series. Their on-screen chemistry convincingly conveys the complex emotional layers of their characters. In addition, the meticulous attention to period detail vividly brings 1950s and 1960s America to life visually.

The series encourages viewers to reflect as it explores universal themes such as feminism, gender equality, marital dynamics, and the clash between scientific progress and social resistance. Thanks to the editing team's meticulous work, both the emotional scenes requiring a slower pace and the tension-filled moments are presented in a smooth rhythm.

Who Is It For?

This is an ideal choice for viewers who enjoy period dramas, value character development, and appreciate productions that explore social themes in depth. Those who admire the aesthetic and narrative structure of Mad Men will find a similar quality in this series.

However, since the theme of sexuality is addressed in a scientific and explicit manner, viewers who are sensitive to such content should proceed with caution. As it contains adult content, it is not suitable for younger viewers. It also offers a rich viewing experience for those interested in history, the history of science, and gender studies.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

1. The extraordinary performances and on-screen chemistry of Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan

2. Meticulous, realistic production design and costume design that pay close attention to period detail

3. A strong screenplay that handles a bold subject with a humane, non-didactic perspective

Cons:

1. Some storylines losing pace in later seasons compared to the first season

2. The explicitness of the sexuality theme potentially being uncomfortable for some viewers

Genre and Tone

The series proceeds in a hybrid tone combining period drama with biographical storytelling. The overall tone is serious and thought-provoking, though it is occasionally supported by a subtle sense of humor. Emotional depth is a dominant element throughout the series, and the emphasis on the characters' inner worlds draws viewers into the story.

Visually, the atmosphere of 1950s-60s America is meticulously rendered. The use of music captures the spirit of the era while enhancing the emotional impact of the scenes.

Runtime and Viewing Experience

The series consists of four seasons and 46 episodes. Episode lengths average between 50-55 minutes. Given this structure, it is a production best watched thoughtfully and at a measured pace, rather than in a weekend binge.

Since each season delves deeply into the characters' professional and personal development, a regular viewing pace is recommended so as not to lose the thread between episodes. The first two seasons generally stand out as the strongest, but the subsequent seasons are also valuable for completing the characters' journeys.

Final Assessment

Masters of Sex is a quality example of the period drama genre, combining its bold subject matter with meticulous research and strong performances. While the performances of Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan convincingly bring complex characters to life, the production design and editing quality of the series also strengthen the overall experience.

A satisfying choice for viewers seeking a deep look into gender, the history of science, and human relationships, the production offers an overall compelling narrative despite some pacing fluctuations in certain seasons. It is definitely worth watching for fans of period dramas and character-driven storytelling.
