Shakespeare & Hathaway - Private Investigators (2018)

Overview

Shakespeare & Hathaway - Private Investigators is a light-toned yet engaging detective series that graced BBC screens in 2018, standing as one of the most enjoyable examples of the British television tradition. Set against the historic and touristic atmosphere of Stratford-upon-Avon, the production blends the classic "murder mystery" formula with British humor to offer viewers a relaxing viewing experience. The show's title also carries a witty reference: while Shakespeare is a nod to the town's famous writer, Hathaway points both to the surname of Shakespeare's wife and to one of the characters in the series.

The production tells the story of two characters from vastly different backgrounds — a former figure from the criminal underworld and a retired police officer — who unexpectedly join forces to establish a private investigation agency. One name that particularly stands out in this production is British actress Nia Gwynne. Gwynne stands out with a performance that successfully balances both dramatic and comedic elements through the character she portrays in the series. Having appeared in various productions throughout her career, the actress has won over viewers with the depth she brings to her character here as well.

While the overall atmosphere of the series reveals the mysteries lurking beneath the calm appearance of English countryside towns, it never burdens the viewer with the weight of a heavy crime drama. This balance makes the production ideal both for family viewing and for those seeking a relaxed evening's entertainment.

Plot

At the heart of the story are two female characters whom life unexpectedly brings together. One has lived a life intertwined with the criminal underworld in her past, while the other is a retired police officer who spent years on the side of the law. The main framework of the series is built around these two contrasting characters finding common ground and establishing a private investigation agency together.

Each episode tackles a different case; navigating through missing persons, suspicious deaths, family secrets, and small-town gossip, the duo develops a partnership that grows both professionally and personally. The touristic fabric of Stratford-upon-Avon, its historic buildings, and its Shakespearean heritage are important elements that color the atmosphere in which the cases unfold. While the series embraces the classic "case of the week" format, it also skillfully advances the characters' personal stories in the background.

Watching the chemistry that emerges as the duo solves cases from their differing perspectives — one relying on street smarts, the other on procedural knowledge — along with the occasional friction between them, is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the series. This character dynamic steps outside classic detective story molds, giving viewers a sense of freshness.

Why Watch It?

Shakespeare & Hathaway is an ideal choice for viewers who want to steer clear of complex and heavy crime dramas, yet don't want to give up elements of mystery and curiosity either. The series' greatest strength lies in the chemistry between its characters and the light humor offered by the script.

Combined with the historic fabric of Stratford-upon-Avon, the visual appeal of English countryside towns means the series offers not just a detective story, but also a sense of "place." Additionally, the fact that each episode tells an independent case allows viewers to follow the series in any order they like, without requiring long-term commitment.

Nia Gwynne's performance is also a strong reason to watch the series. The naturalness and energy she brings to her character make a significant contribution to the overall mood of the show.
