The Following (2013)
Overview
The Following is an American television series that premiered in 2013 and has etched itself into memory as one of the most intense examples of the psychological thriller genre. Created by Kevin Williamson, the production features a lead performance by Kevin Bacon that commands attention. The series revolves around a charismatic and manipulative serial killer and the vast network of followers he organizes around himself, adopting a structure that pushes the boundaries of the classic crime narrative. Among the names on the production's team is the technical crew that contributed to the show's visual atmosphere; in this regard, the efforts of figures like J. Tucker Smith in the post-production process played an important role in conveying the show's dark and tense tone to viewers. The Following drew intense interest from both critics and viewers during its original run, and became a subject of debate particularly due to its violent content and psychological depth.
Plot
At the center of the series is Ryan Hardy, a former FBI agent. Hardy is forced to once again confront his history with a serial killer named Joe Carroll, whom he caught and sent to prison years earlier. When Carroll escapes from prison—or mobilizes through his connections on the outside—it becomes clear that he is merely the visible face of a much larger and more complex structure. The cult of followers that Carroll has built up over the years, drawing in people from different ages and social strata, forms one of the series' most striking elements. These followers are individuals hidden within ordinary lives, ready to faithfully carry out Carroll's instructions. As Hardy tries to unravel this dangerous network, his confrontation with both his past and his own traumas strengthens the story's emotional layer. As the series progresses, the question of who can truly be trusted and who is wearing a mask keeps the viewer constantly on edge.
Why Should You Watch It?
The Following steps outside the familiar conventions of the thriller genre to offer viewers a different kind of experience. One of the series' greatest strengths is that it presents its villain not merely as an individual threat but as the leader of an ideology and a community. This approach makes the classic "hunter and prey" dynamic far more complex. Kevin Bacon's performance masterfully reflects the character's inner conflicts and weariness, while the antagonist on the opposing side is likewise supported by richly developed writing. Additionally, the series' atmospheric construction, along with editing choices that keep the tension constantly alive and its surprising plot twists, keep viewers glued to the screen. This detailed treatment of the theme of psychological manipulation opens up not just a crime story but a space for questioning the darker sides of human nature.
Who Is It For?
This series is well suited to viewers who enjoy productions filled with intense tension and psychological pressure. Those who love crime drama, serial-killer-themed stories, and character-driven thriller narratives will find what they're looking for in The Following. However, it should be noted that due to its intense violent scenes and disturbing themes, the show may be somewhat challenging for sensitive viewers. Rather than those approaching it expecting action and a classic procedural, viewers interested in character psychology and group dynamics will get more enjoyment out of this production.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
1. Kevin Bacon's compelling and convincing performance carries the series' emotional backbone with great strength.
2. The multidimensional writing of the antagonist goes beyond the classic villain archetype.
3. The editing and script structure, which keeps tension consistently high, keeps viewers glued to the screen throughout each episode.
Cons:
1. In some seasons, the story's flow can become repetitive, causing a loss of pacing in later episodes.
2. The intense violent scenes may not be suitable for every audience.
Genre and Tone
The Following sits at the intersection of psychological thriller and crime drama genres. The show's tone is generally dark, tense, and at times disturbing in atmosphere. The emphasis placed on the characters' inner worlds adds dramatic depth to the story, while surprising developments in the plot keep the element of suspense constantly alive. Visually, the dim color palette used and the claustrophobic scene compositions evoke a persistent sense of unease in the viewer.
Runtime and Viewing Experience
The series consists of three interconnected seasons, with each season offering its own distinct line of tension. Episodes generally run between 40-45 minutes, and the intensely paced storytelling encourages viewers to move on to the next episode. The constantly shifting alliances and unexpected developments make for a smooth viewing experience. However, due to the complex character relationships that require viewers to stay highly attentive, it is recommended that the series be watched consecutively and carefully.

Final Assessment
The Following is a production that brings a fresh perspective to serial-killer-themed stories, standing out for its character depth and level of tension. Kevin Bacon's performance and the story's bold structure make the series one of the standout examples of its genre. Although it experiences occasional fluctuations in pacing, it overall delivers a memorable television experience that takes viewers on a suspense-filled journey.
