Sexy Beast (2024)

Overview

Sexy Beast arrives as a prequel series to the cult British gangster film directed by Jonathan Glazer in 2000, a movie etched into memory by Ben Kingsley's unforgettable performance. Streaming under the Paramount+ banner, the production is built around a question film fans have long been curious about: how did characters like Gary "Gal" Dove and Don Logan become who they were? The series explores the turbulent years before the calm of the Spanish villa where the original film took place — in other words, how the characters rose through London's criminal underworld and the roots of the complicated relationship between them.

Starring names like James McArdle and Emun Elliott in the lead roles, the production serves both as a tribute to the original film and an attempt to stand on its own as an independent story. Reconstructing the dark and dazzling underworld of 1990s London, the series proves to be quite ambitious when it comes to period atmosphere. The attention paid to era-specific details in terms of production quality, costume, and art direction is striking.

Plot

The story focuses on the years before Gal Dove met Don Logan, when Gal was still an ordinary thief. Trying to survive in London's dangerous criminal world, Gal gradually finds himself involved in bigger and riskier jobs. The partnership he forms with Don Logan, whom he meets during this process, lays the groundwork for events that will change both of their lives forever.

Throughout the series, viewers watch how these two characters, despite having such different personalities, remain bound to one another, and how the balance of trust and betrayal between them takes shape. At the same time, the story of DeeDee, the woman who enters Gal's life and will pull him in an entirely different direction, forms an important part of the narrative. Themes such as the ruthless rules of the criminal underworld, loyalty, betrayal, and the desire to escape form the main veins of the series.

The narrative structure, which progresses across parallel timelines, draws the viewer into the whole of the story by presenting both the past and clues about the characters' present-day states together.

Why Watch It?

The primary reason to watch Sexy Beast is that it offers a deeper journey into the universe of a cult film. For fans of the original, exploring the characters' past and finding answers to long-wondered questions about them provides a satisfying experience. However, the series tries to be more than just a nostalgia play.

The performances are compelling, particularly in how the actor playing Don Logan sets the stage for Ben Kingsley's iconic interpretation of the character. The successful portrayal of the period atmosphere, bringing 1990s London to life both visually and culturally, is one of the series' strengths. The power dynamics within the criminal underworld, the tension between characters, and the occasional flashes of dark humor keep the viewer engaged with the story.

The series is also intriguing for those familiar with the cinematic language of the British gangster film tradition, as it offers a world that is both familiar and reinterpreted.

Who Is It For?

This production offers the most meaningful experience especially for viewers who have watched the original Sexy Beast film and formed an emotional connection with its characters. Viewers interested in British crime underworld narratives and the gangster drama genre, who enjoy sharp dialogue and dark humor, will also enjoy the series.

It's also a suitable choice for viewers who appreciate gradually built character development and a period drama atmosphere, and who prefer stories focused on character analysis rather than action. However, for those expecting fast-paced, constant action, the series may not fully meet expectations. It's worth noting that due to scenes containing violence and profanity, it caters to an adult audience.

Pros and Cons

1. Expands the universe of the cult film with a story that sparks curiosity about the characters' past.

2. Successfully recreates the period atmosphere of 1990s London.

3. Strong performances, particularly the chemistry and tension between the main characters.

Cons:

1. For those who haven't seen the original film, there's a risk that some references and emotional depth won't be fully understood.

2. The pacing can occasionally feel heavy, which may require patience from some viewers.

Genre and Tone

The series carries the classic elements of the crime drama genre while adopting a tone blended with dark humor. Alongside tension-filled scenes, the ironic and sharp wit that emerges in dialogue between characters shows an effort to stay faithful to the tone of the original film. Elements of violence are presented realistically and at times disturbingly, which adds weight to the story.

Visually, great importance has been placed on period aesthetics; costume design, location choices, and the use of music strongly reflect the atmosphere of the 1990s. The overall tone is both nostalgic and dark, structured around questioning the complexity of human nature.

Runtime and Viewing Experience

Consisting of a limited number of episodes, the series is presented in a format that viewers can complete over a weekend or across a few evenings.
