Major Crimes (2012)

Overview

Major Crimes is a spin-off series developed as a continuation of The Closer, one of the most beloved police procedurals in American television history. Premiering in 2012, the series follows a special unit within the Los Angeles Police Department as they work to solve complex, high-profile criminal cases. Created by James Duff, the show ran for six seasons and secured a lasting place in the hearts of crime drama fans.

One of the series' most notable aspects is how it expands and enriches the character universe carried over from The Closer. Mary McDonnell's portrayal of Sharon Raydor stands out as the show's central figure, leading the LAPD's Major Crimes unit. Every character on the team brings their own distinct flavor to the series. Among them is Phillip P. Keene, who plays Buzz Watson, taking on an important role as the team's technical and forensic analysis expert.

Major Crimes doesn't just focus on the mechanics of crime-solving; it also delves deeply into how the justice system operates, prosecutorial processes, plea bargaining, and the ethical dilemmas involved in punishing offenders. In this regard, it offers a narrative that goes beyond the classic procedural formula.

Plot

The series follows the Major Crimes team, a special unit of the Los Angeles Police Department, as they investigate high-profile, complex, and socially sensitive criminal cases. The team doesn't just catch criminals — they also specialize in gathering the evidence needed to successfully prosecute them in court and in managing the confession process.

Led by Sharon Raydor, the team features a broad cast of police officers, detectives, and forensic experts. While each episode is generally built around a new case, the characters' personal stories and the dynamics between them are also developed as ongoing subplots across the seasons. The series covers various types of crime — murder, kidnapping, fraud, and more — while never losing sight of the human motivations and social context behind them.

The bureaucratic and ethical dimensions of the justice system are one of the show's defining elements. Plea bargains, cooperation with prosecutors, and strategic maneuvering within court proceedings all add depth to the series' storytelling.

Why Watch It?

Major Crimes is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a quality, consistent production in the police procedural genre. The show's strong scriptwriting delivers gripping tension in every episode without ever growing tiresome. The in-depth development of its characters goes beyond a purely case-driven narrative, making room for human relationships and personal growth as well.

Sharon Raydor's leadership style and the dynamics within the team are among the series' strongest assets. Mary McDonnell's performance skillfully balances her character's determination with her capacity for empathy. Supporting characters, such as Phillip P. Keene's Buzz Watson, also shine in their respective episodes, reinforcing the show's sense of ensemble identity.

The series also offers a realistic portrayal of the legal system. It's not just about solving the crime — the process of proving it in court and securing justice is explored in detail as well. This approach gives viewers an experience that differs from standard procedural formulas.

Who Is It For?

Major Crimes is ideal for fans of classic police and crime dramas. It's especially well-suited to viewers who appreciate character-driven storytelling and who are interested not only in action but also in legal and psychological detail. For those who watched The Closer, it serves as a natural continuation, while those who never watched it can follow the show perfectly well on its own.

It offers a satisfying experience for viewers who enjoy long-running, ensemble-driven series — who like seeing a new case each episode while also following the characters' long-term development. It's also a good pick for those who avoid heavy violence and prefer a more intellectual, dialogue-driven kind of tension.

Pros and Cons

Pros: 1. A strong, deeply developed cast of characters, especially Sharon Raydor's leadership arc. 2. A realistic and detailed portrayal of legal and forensic processes. 3. Consistent writing quality and character development maintained throughout every season.

Cons: 1. In some episodes, the case resolutions can feel predictable. 2. New viewers who haven't watched The Closer may feel that some character backstories are missing.

Genre and Tone

Major Crimes stands as a classic example of the police and crime drama genre. Tonally, it presents a predominantly serious and realistic atmosphere, while occasionally showing a subtle sense of humor in the dialogue between characters. Rather than relying on excessive violence or bloody scenes, the series favors psychological tension and strategic thinking.

Despite following a procedural format, the importance it places on characters' personal stories and ethical dilemmas sets it apart from run-of-the-mill police dramas. The complexity and human dimensions of the justice system are the core elements shaping the show's tone.

Runtime and Viewing Experience

The series ran for six seasons, with each season containing anywhere from roughly 13 to 19 episodes. Episodes typically run about 43 minutes, offering a viewing experience in line with a classic television format. While each episode tells a self-contained case, season-long subplots also keep viewers engaged with the overarching story.
