Burst Angel (2004)

Overview

Burst Angel is an action-packed science fiction anime released in 2004, set in a dystopian Tokyo. Produced by the Gonzo studio, the series presents a distinctive universe that blends a future Japan, political turmoil, the criminal underworld, and advanced technology. At the center of the story is a group of female heroes with extraordinary abilities, along with an ordinary young girl who is swept into their team. The series stands out both for its flashy action sequences and for the emotional bonds the characters form with one another. Upon release, it gained a wide fanbase, particularly among viewers who favored mecha and cyberpunk themes. Its visual design stands out with weapon and vehicle designs that were considered quite innovative for the time, giving the series a unique aesthetic identity.

Beyond being simply an action-focused production, Burst Angel offers a narrative that also places importance on character development. In particular, the way its female characters are portrayed as strong, independent, and multidimensional creates a notable difference compared to anime of the era. Throughout the series, both individual stories and clues about the bigger picture are presented in a balanced way.

Plot

The story takes place in a future Tokyo that has become corrupt and rife with crime. The city has a complex order in which powerful criminal organizations hold sway alongside official authority. In this environment, a small but effective team working under a security company called "Bail Organization" fights against the threats plaguing the city. At the heart of the team are characters such as Jo, who skillfully wields advanced weapon systems; Meg, who draws attention with her mysterious past; and Amy, who supports the team with her technical intelligence.

Events take shape when Jo Carpenter (the name may vary in some translations of the series), an ordinary young girl who comes to Tokyo to attend culinary school, finds her life unexpectedly intersecting with this team. The young woman finds herself in this dangerous, action-filled world and gradually becomes an indispensable part of the team. As the series progresses, large-scale conspiracies threatening the city, secret technologies, and secrets from the characters' pasts come to light. Viewers follow both the individual character stories and the major conflicts that will shape the city's future.

Why Watch It?

Although Burst Angel was released in the mid-2000s, it remains a production that can still be watched with interest today. First and foremost, the quality and choreography of the action sequences stand out; the use of weapons, vehicle designs, and battle scenes are crafted with great care. The series also centers on strong female characters, bringing to the forefront a theme that was relatively underexplored in the anime industry of its time. The depth of the characters' personalities goes beyond the mere "strong warrior" cliché, giving them human dimensions.

The depiction of dystopian Tokyo is a visual feast for cyberpunk fans. The city's dark streets, high-tech weapons, and the atmosphere of the underworld draw the viewer into the story. The series' music and overall atmosphere are also crafted to support this dark yet energetic world. Its structure, which balances action, drama, and light humor, offers viewers variety.

Who Is It For?

Burst Angel is ideal especially for viewers who enjoy action, science fiction, and cyberpunk genres. Scenes filled with mecha designs, heavy weaponry, and technological elements will satisfy fans of the genre. The series also offers a satisfying experience for those interested in productions where strong female characters take center stage. Viewers who enjoy the classic 2000s anime aesthetic and approach the drawing and animation style of the era with nostalgia will also enjoy this production.

It is also a suitable choice for viewers who are not looking for heavy drama but rather fast-paced action sequences and entertaining character interactions. However, since it contains scenes of intense violence, parental guidance is recommended for younger viewers.
