iZombie (2015)

Overview

Arriving on CW screens in 2015, iZombie is an original series created by Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Shearer that skillfully blends crime procedural elements with the fantastical. Inspired by the comic book by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred, the show completely flips the classic zombie narrative on its head, bringing a fresh breath of air to the genre. Our lead character, Liv Moore, turns into a zombie after an unfortunate incident right as she's climbing the ladder of a promising career, forcing her to rebuild her life from scratch. But in this series, zombies aren't mindless creatures roaming the streets bent on destruction; instead, they're portrayed as characters hiding within society who possess human emotions and intelligence.

The most striking aspect of the show is how it balances the theme of death with comedy, drama, and mystery. While a different murder case is solved in each episode, the temporary personality traits Liv gains from the brains she eats become a narrative device that's both entertaining and adds depth to her character. Running for five seasons, the show managed to earn positive reactions from both critics and audiences alike.

Plot

Liv Moore, a young and successful surgeon in Seattle, turns into a zombie following a mysterious incident at a boat party she attends. Having lost control of her life, Liv is forced to give up her old life, her fiancé, and her career. Realizing she needs to consume human brains to keep living, Liv starts working at a coroner's office, which gives her access to the brains of the bodies in the morgue.

However, every brain she eats transfers to her that person's memories, personality traits, and sometimes clues about the moment of their death. This allows her to shed light on unsolved murder cases alongside Detective Clive Babineaux. Keeping her extraordinary ability a secret, Liv tells the police she experiences "visions," and fights for justice this way. Meanwhile, alongside her boss Ravi Chakrabarti, she tries to find a cure for the zombie virus, while the city's growing zombie threat and the power struggles lurking behind it form one of the story's main throughlines.

Why Should You Watch It?

There are plenty of reasons to watch iZombie. First of all, the show's format is remarkably innovative; the personality and appearance that change according to whichever brain Liv has eaten in a given episode offer the viewer a constantly different experience in terms of acting performance. Rose McIver's masterful portrayal of these transitions is one of the show's strongest assets.

The series also brings crime-procedural elements together with fantasy/sci-fi elements in a balanced way. The fact that each season contains its own mystery layer encourages viewers to follow along episode by episode. The dialogue is fluid, witty, and clever, and the chemistry between characters is remarkably successful. The way the zombie theme is pulled away from clichés and blended with topics like social issues, identity, acceptance, and marginalization gives the show an unexpected depth.

The visual effects and makeup work are also quite impressive for the era; in particular, the staging of the zombie transformations is the product of meticulous craftsmanship. The show's overall tone offers a light and fluid viewing experience supported by dark humor, without tipping over into heavy drama.

Who Is It For?

iZombie is an ideal choice for both fans of the crime/mystery genre and fans of fantasy-sci-fi. It will be quite satisfying for viewers who are looking for something different from zombie-themed productions and who want a more character-driven, humor-focused approach instead of the classic "survival" narrative. Additionally, those who enjoy stories featuring strong female characters will take pleasure in Liv Moore's transformation process.

It's also a fitting choice for viewers who aren't bothered by intense violence and gore scenes, but who don't want the heavy, bleak atmosphere of something like The Walking Dead. As it's a CW production aimed at a young adult audience, romantic subplots and character relationships also hold an important place in the show.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

1. Thanks to its original screenplay structure, each episode serves as both a standalone case and a contribution to the overall story.

2. Rose McIver's versatile acting surprises the viewer by transforming into a different character in each episode.

3. The successful balance struck between dark humor and drama sets the show apart from ordinary zombie productions.

Cons:

1. As the seasons progress, the multiplication of side stories can make it harder for some viewers to follow the main plotline.

2. Some season finales can feel rushed, not fully meeting expectations.

Genre and Tone

The show brings together crime, fantasy, dark comedy, and drama genres. While its tone is generally light and witty, it occasionally gains emotional depth through themes like human relationships, loss, and identity crises. Here, the zombie element is used less as a horror device and more as a tool to explore characters' inner conflicts and the theme of social marginalization. In this respect, the show positions itself less as a typical horror production and more as a fantasy-drama carrying social commentary.

Runtime and Viewing Experience

iZombie consists of a total of 5 seasons and 71 episodes. With episode lengths averaging around 42 minutes, it has a flowing pace suited to daily viewing habits. Since story continuity is maintained across seasons, watching the show in order provides the best experience. The first three seasons in particular offer a quite satisfying pace both in terms of case resolutions and overall story flow, while the story wraps up more quickly in the final seasons.
